Becoming a Lineman

What does it take to be a lineman?

Thick skin, determination, a willingness to sacrifice, and being a public servant by giving up a normal life to help others. Many linemen are generational and follow in the footsteps of their parents, grandparents, and other family members. Even if you aren't exposed to this type of lifestyle from a young age, an understanding of the hard work and dedication required for this profession will help you succeed in reaching your goal.

Linework is physically and mentally demanding. Not only will you need an in-depth knowledge of electricity and how it works, but you'll need to apply that knowledge under stressful conditions while respecting all possible dangers. Having a love for the outdoors and being capable of working in all types of weather is equally important. No one said keeping the lights on was going to be easy! There's a reason why linemen hold so much pride for the sacrifices they've made - as should you if you decide to continue down this path.

Lineman Schools

With an aging industry and more lineworkers retiring at a rapid rate, the best path for success is enrolling in a lineworker program at a school near you. Upon graduating, you will have the knowledge and skills necessary to begin your career as a pre-apprentice lineman. Many schools also offer direct connections to future employers and local union groups.
